How to use Smart DevOps Software to Decide Between a Greenfield or Brownfield S/4 HANA Upgrade Approach

greenfield of brownfield

Today we’re showing you how our smart software will help you define that path by providing a complete view of the readiness, impact and roadmap to SAP S/4HANA.

Different Approaches to the Upgrade

When migrating to SAP S/4HANA, you have a spectrum of options ranging from greenfield (new implementation) to brownfield (upgrade and optimize). Our partner, IBM GBS, offers a special service called bluefield.

One option you have is a Greenfield implementation. This is a completely new implementation. Perhaps you have a lot of customizations. Maybe these customizations don’t reflect how you do business today. Maybe the business operates completely differently compared with when you adopted R3. A greenfield approach is good for process simplification, giving organizations the opportunity to retire legacy customizations and work to streamline processes.

At the other end of the spectrum you have the Brownfield approach. This is treated as a traditional upgrade, enabling a migration to SAP S/4HANA without re-implementation. You may want to upgrade and then look at optimizing systems where you can, once the upgrade is live.

These approaches represent the main transition approaches but it is important to understand your current landscape and what functionality the business relies on to determine the best migration option for you. This is where IntelliCorp software helps.

How does our Software Support these Scenarios?

LiveCompare will help you understand the implementation from a technical perspective. Its automated analysis tells you what SAP has changed and how that will impact your SAP implementation, business and users. Dashboards and detailed reports split this analysis into five areas: development, testing, integration, security and training. LiveCompare also provides smart project management time and effort estimate based on the PERT methodology.

We work with many organizations looking to adopt a smart DevOps approach to their SAP lifecycle. LiveCompare provides your team with everything they need to support an approach of development, testing and operations.

LiveModel is a business process visualization tool and should be used for both green and brownfield approaches (and everything in between!). If you’ve run the SAP S/4HANA upgrade assessment in LiveCompare, you can overlay the results in LiveModel to really understand the impact on your business processes. LiveModel diagrams show you what business processes you’re using, which ones are impacted by the upgrade, and what’s testable. By testable we mean cross referencing with your chosen test management/automation suite (MicroFocus HP ALM, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Azure DevOps, Tricentis Tosca, Worksoft Certify) to identify where you have gaps in your tests.

When migrating, project teams face the same challenge: how to properly test business scenarios and train user communities without valid, timely and real-world data. This is where LiveInterface helps. LiveInterface is a real-time test data management tool which allows users to extract subsets of production data, mask sensitive data and copy data to any other system for test purposes.

The Benefits?

You save time and effort creating secure test data that reflects your real SAP systems.
